Literary terms in English literature

Literature is an important part of human culture and is a rich collection of poems, short stories, plays, novels, essays, biographies, and other literary works. Through literature writers express their thoughts, feelings and opinions and communicate with the readers. It plays an important role in the cultural, historical and physical context of a society and gives rise to various values, meanings and discourses of a society. And Literary terms refer to the technique, style, and formatting used by writers and speakers to masterfully emphasize, embellish, or strengthen their compositions.

Some important literary terms and figure of speech at a glance.

Plot  : Main story of a play. The sequence of events / contents in a poem. 

Act : Major division of the action of a play.

Protagonist : The leading character of actor in a play.

Allegorical : An allegory is a story of double meaning. In it one story is told in the guise of another story. Ex- The holy war.

Metaphor : An implicit comparison between two different things.

Climax : The Climax of a plot is what happens at the height.

Catastrophe : The tragic end of dramatic events.

Soliloquy : Soliloquy is a dramatic technique of speaking along on stage.

Epilogue :  A speech at the end of a play.

Allusion : An implicit or indirect reference to another word of literature, a historical or mythical parson or event.

Anapest : Repetition of the same sound. Ex- day and night, night and day.

Alliteration : The repetition of beginning consonant sound. Ex- puffs-powder.

Assonance : Repetition of a vowel sound in nearby words. Ex- love and done.

Anthology : A collection of selected poems or other pieces writing.

Aphorism : It is a proverb or universal truth. Ex- love is blind.

Diction : The choice / selection of words.

Hyperbole : An overstatement or exaggeration.

Irony : The used of words that say the opposite of what you really mean.

Paradox : Paradox is a self contradictory statement.

Chorus : A body of singers who perform together as a group (presentation group song).

Blank Verse : Blank verse is a kind of verse having no rhyming end.

Rhyme : The sound pattern made by the rise and fall of the unstressed and stressed syllables in verse line or speech. Ex- Fight, bight, light.

Syntax : It's related words and sentence.

Simile : An explicit comparison between two things.The comparison  of unlike things  the comparison using the words 'like' or 'as'.

Symbol : Anything that stand for something else.

Couplet : Two lines of verse rhyming together.
